Jay Rock's impact on hip-hop has endured for decades, paralleling the influence of his fellow signees at Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE). Originally joining TDE in 2005, the Los Angeles-based rapper later transitioned to Strange Music in 2011, a collaborative label founded by Tech N9ne in partnership with TDE.
A significant contributor to the hip-hop scene, Jay Rock is also a co-founder of the acclaimed hip-hop supergroup Black Hippy. Comprising entirely of TDE talent, the group includes Ab-Soul, Kendrick Lamar, and ScHoolboy Q.
Now, after fifteen years since the formation of Black Hippy, Jay Rock has hinted at the imminent release of a TDE compilation album. In a recent interview with the Associated Press, he disclosed that the LP is slated for an early 2024 release.
"It's been 20 years since TDE entered the game. So, we are putting together a compilation album, and we should be dropping that at the top of the year," he revealed. "I don't know how many songs we're going to put on there, but we've got a majority of Black Hippy on that thing."
Although the members of Black Hippy have frequently collaborated, they have never officially released a formal EP or album. Earlier this year, CEO Anthony "Top Dawg" Tiffith had teased the group's reunion, acknowledging that they "owe y'all an album or EP."
