Tennis legend Serena Williams has been announced as one of the executive producers of a new Netflix tennis drama series, Carrie Soto Is Back. The series will be produced in partnership with her production company, Nine Two Six. The highly anticipated release is an adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s best-selling tennis-themed novel, for which she revealed that the Williams sisters were major inspirations. When the novel was released in 2022, Reid said, “My incredible respect for the Williams sisters is part of what makes me interested in tennis. I wouldn’t write a book about tennis without the influence of just the absolute glory that has been their journey—but also specifically Serena’s quest to get as many Grand Slam titles as she managed to do.”

While the series is not a direct biopic of the tennis star, Netflix has confirmed that the adaptation is expected to be loosely inspired by Serena’s story.

Written and executive produced by Amanda Kate Shuman, Carrie Soto Is Back tells the story of tennis player Carrie Soto, who is intensely focused on winning—regardless of how she achieves it. By the time she retires from tennis, she has built a record-breaking career. However, six years into retirement, her world record is threatened by a rising star, Nicki Chan, who is determined to surpass Soto’s legacy. Determined to defend her title and prove she’s still the best, Carrie makes the bold decision to come out of retirement.

The series will explore themes such as love, success, and family. This is not the first time Williams has stepped into the role of executive producer, as she also produced the 2024 docuseries In the Arena: Serena Williams and the award-winning film King Richard. The series’ director, cast, production details, and release date have not yet been disclosed, but fans of the book have already begun creating their dream cast.
