With an eerie yet upbeat tempo Rema strikes a perfect balance between familiarity and unpredictability.
What a year Rema is having, from the remix of his hit record Calm Down with Selena Gomez hitting a billion streams on Spotify to sold-out shows around the world, he doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. His newly released EP titled RAVAGE comes barely two weeks after his collaboration with female rap sensation Ice Spice.
RAVAGE takes us on a pulsating experience outside the boundaries of genre and conformity. With an eerie yet upbeat tempo, Rema strikes a perfect balance between familiarity and unpredictability. He employs the expertise of Blaise Beatz, P.Prime & London as he seeks to create immersive and grandiose sonic landscapes.
He starts off the EP asking ‘How many dues wey the boy don pay? How many insult I go take?’, responding to critics who have termed him a Trouble Maker. Without mincing words, he puts himself on a level above the rest of his peers. He admonishes anyone who tries to compete with him, saying ‘I go still pass everybody even though say una use extra sheet’.
DND takes it up a notch as Rema comes once again for his naysayers as he refuses to conform to whatever expectations have been set for him by anyone but himself.
Smooth Criminal captures the very essence of this EP as Rema lets his braggadocio run crazy on this amapiano-infused record produced by P.Prime. He flexes his deep pockets and status unapologetically as he declares himself the Prince of Afrobeats.
On Don’t Leave, he explores a relationship bound by lust and desire. P.Prime and London band together to create a dreamy soundscape as Rema delivers a typical array of sensual lyrics.
Rema closes out the EP with Red Potion, a masterpiece that is yet another mind-blowing exemplification of Rema and London’s synergy. This track takes us back to his roots as he explores familiar sonic landscapes coupled with sultry lyricism to deliver a standout track. Red Potion is as authentic as it gets with Rema, he perfectly displays his artistic superiority as he effortlessly floats in and out of different sonic pockets.
Rema’s ability to reinvent himself when needed is what sets him apart from the rest.
With this EP, he dispels any doubts about who is top of his class. He unambiguously distinguishes himself as an artist cut from a different cloth, RAVAGE is a testament to this fact.
