Outkast, Chubby Checker, Salt-N-Pepa, and Thom Bell announced as Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees.
Prominent Black musicians Outkast, Chubby Checker, Salt-N-Pepa, and Thom Bell have been announced as part of the 13 musicians selected for induction into the 2025 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. After the nominations list was released and voting concluded, the legendary rap group Outkast and Chubby Checker will be inducted in the Performer category, while Salt-N-Pepa, one of the first all-female hip-hop groups, will receive the Musical Influence Award. Legendary music producer Thom Bell will also receive the Musical Excellence Award. This is Checker’s and Outkast’s first nomination, and they got in on their first selection, while Salt-N-Pepa were handpicked by the organization’s board.
The inclusion of these musical pioneers demonstrates that their music remains relevant and continues to influence contemporary music creation. This year’s induction list recognises the contributions of these musicians across various genres, pop culture, and music production, making it an impressive compilation that honours innovators who have shaped the soundscape of modern music. Checker’s induction is particularly noteworthy and a historic moment, marking the culmination of his long quest for recognition. “The Twist” crooner had previously made a public plea in Billboard magazine and also wrote a letter of frustration to the Rock Hall, urging them to acknowledge him “while he could still smell his flowers.” Now, he is finally receiving his recognition — and a garden of flowers.
The other selected inductees include Bad Company, Joe Cocker, Cyndi Lauper, Soundgarden, The White Stripes, Lenny Waronker, Carol Kaye, Nicky Hopkins, and Warren Zevon. This year’s inductees were unveiled live on American Idol by Ryan Seacrest.
While speaking about this year’s inductees, Hall of Fame chairman John Sykes stated, “Each of these inductees created their own sound and attitude that had a profound impact on culture and helped to change the course of Rock & Roll forever. Their music gave a voice to generations and influenced countless artists who followed in their footsteps.” The induction ceremony will be held at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles on November 8 and will be streamed live on Disney+, with an edited broadcast airing later on ABC.
