A Year of Triumph and Resilience
A Year of Triumph and Resilience
American gymnastics icon Simone Biles has been named Sports Illustrated’s 2024 Sportsperson of the Year, capping a remarkable year of athletic and personal achievement. The 27-year-old gymnast has been tagged as one of the greatest athletes of all time, securing her place in history with a stellar performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Biles delivered a breathtaking display in Paris, earning four Olympic medals—three golds in the team, all-around, and floor exercise events, and a silver in vault. These victories brought her total Olympic medal count to 11, tying her for the second-most decorated female gymnast in history.
Her Paris success is even more significant given her comeback journey from the challenges of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. In Tokyo, she withdrew from several events due to the “twisties,” a dangerous condition that disrupts a gymnast's spatial awareness. Overcoming these struggles, Biles showcased her unmatched skill and resilience in Paris, reaffirming her dominance in the sport.
Beyond her athletic achievements, Biles has become a powerful voice in discussions about mental health, resilience, and advocacy. Sports Illustrated praised her for "changing the face of her sport and the conversations around athletes in general." Her candidness about her struggles and determination to succeed has inspired millions, making her influence extend far beyond gymnastics.
Reflecting on the huge feat, Biles said on Good Morning America, “Honestly, it is such a huge honour. I know some of the greats that have won it in prior years, so to just keep gymnastics on the map is really exciting. I know a lot of people love the sport of gymnastics during an Olympic year and have followed my career closely, but I was still very shocked.”
Biles will officially accept the Sportsperson of the Year award on January 7 at the annual Sports Illustrated Awards ceremony in Las Vegas, hosted by actor Keegan-Michael Key. This recognition adds another accolade to her illustrious career, cementing her as not only a champion in gymnastics but a role model for perseverance and excellence.
First awarded in 1954, Sports Illustrated’s Sportsperson of the Year recognizes individuals who have transcended their sports to leave a lasting impact. For Biles, this honor is yet another testament to her extraordinary legacy, both as a gymnast and a woman of inspiration.
