Serena Williams has joined the ownership group of Toronto's upcoming WNBA team, the Toronto Tempo.

Williams announced her involvement on social media, featuring a video of a tennis ball transforming into a WNBA basketball, accompanied by the phrase "New Court, New Game." In a statement, the 23-time Grand Slam champion expressed her enthusiasm, emphasizing the importance of showcasing the value of female athletes. "This moment is not just about basketball; it is about showcasing the true value and potential of female athletes—I have always said that women’s sports are an incredible investment opportunity. I am excited to partner with Larry [Tanenbaum] and all of Canada in creating this new WNBA franchise and legacy."

The Toronto Tempo is primarily owned by Kilmer Sports Ventures, chaired by Larry Tanenbaum, who also chairs Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, the parent company of the Toronto Raptors, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Toronto FC. Teresa Resch is expected to lead the team, which will be the 15th in the WNBA and will begin its inaugural season in 2026.

This venture expands Williams's sports ownership portfolio, which already includes stakes in the Miami Dolphins, Angel City FC, and the Los Angeles Golf Club.
