The NBA has handed down a 25-game suspension to Memphis Grizzlies' standout guard Ja Morant, effective from the start of the upcoming 2023-2024 season. The league has also imposed certain "conditions" that Morant must meet before he can make his return, although specific details of these conditions have not been disclosed yet.

This anticipated suspension comes in the wake of two separate incidents involving Morant, both captured in Instagram videos. The first incident occurred in March, resulting in an initial eight-game suspension, while the second incident took place in May, leading to an indefinite suspension from all team activities by the Grizzlies. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and the league's front office concluded their investigation into Morant's behavior several weeks ago but opted to wait until the conclusion of the NBA Finals between the Denver Nuggets and Miami Heat to announce the suspension, aiming to avoid distractions during the crucial playoff series. However, some skeptics viewed the timing as a strategic move by the league to extend its news cycle between the end of the Finals and the upcoming NBA Draft.

ESPN reporter Adrian Wojnarowski, who initially broke the news of Morant's suspension, had speculated in early June that the league might suspend him for 17 games, making him ineligible for postseason awards. Other sources, including former NBA player Chandler Parsons, had suggested the possibility of a longer suspension, possibly even an entire season. The NBA's decision to impose a 25-game suspension, equivalent to almost one-third of the season, is undoubtedly significant but allows Morant to return to the court for a substantial portion of the 2023-24 season.

In the upcoming season, Morant is set to embark on a lucrative five-year, $194 million USD max contract. While he fell short of earning a supermax contract by not making the All-NBA First team last season, he remains a highly promising talent. Morant also boasts valuable endorsement deals with Nike and Powerade. Despite the popularity and rapid sell-out of his signature Ja 1 sneaker, its future remains uncertain following these recent events. Furthermore, Powerade has pulled a commercial featuring Morant after the March incident.

The NBA announced today that Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant has been suspended 25 games without pay for conduct detrimental to the league. Morant posed with a firearm in a car during a live-streamed video on May 13, less than two months after he was suspended eight games without pay for the live streaming of a video on March 4 in which he displayed a firearm while in an intoxicated state at a Denver area nightclub.

The league office found that, on May 13, Morant intentionally and prominently displayed a gun while in a car with several other individuals as they were leaving a social gathering in Memphis. Morant wielded the firearm while knowing that he was being recorded and that the recording was being live streamed on Instagram Live, despite having made commitments to the NBA and public statements that he would not repeat the conduct for which he was previously disciplined.

On May 16, Morant issued a statement taking full accountability for his actions. Morant’s suspension begins immediately and will remain in effect through the first 25 games of the 2023-24 NBA regular season for which he is otherwise eligible and able to play. He will also be required to meet certain conditions before he returns to play and will be ineligible to participate in any public league or team activities, including preseason games, during the course of his suspension.

“Ja Morant’s decision to once again wield a firearm on social media is alarming and disconcerting given his similar conduct in March for which he was already suspended eight games,” said NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. “The potential for other young people to emulate Ja’s conduct is particularly concerning. Under these circumstances, we believe a suspension of 25 games is appropriate and makes clear that engaging in reckless and irresponsible behavior with guns will not be tolerated. “For Ja, basketball needs to take a back seat at this time. Prior to his return to play, he will be required to formulate and fulfill a program with the league that directly addresses the circumstances that led him to repeat this destructive behavior.”
