"Not Like Us" Legal Dispute Partially Resolved
Drake has reached a settlement with iHeartMedia, resolving his lawsuit against the company. However, his legal dispute with Universal Music Group (UMG) remains ongoing.
The lawsuit stemmed from Drake's allegations that UMG engaged in "irregular and inappropriate business practices" to increase airplay for Kendrick Lamar's "Not Like Us." Drake, who is also signed to UMG, claimed the label made undisclosed payments, known as payola, to iHeartMedia for the additional airtime.
Drake's petition further alleged that UMG was aware that "Not Like Us," along with its album art and music video, contained defamatory content that falsely accused him of being a sex offender, engaging in pedophilic acts, and harboring sex offenders. The petition cited specific lyrics that labeled Drake a "certified pedophile" and a "predator."
In a statement regarding the iHeartMedia settlement, Drake's legal team said, "We are pleased that the parties were able to reach a settlement satisfactory to both sides, and have no further comment on this matter."
It is important to note that the Federal Communications Commission is separately investigating iHeartMedia for unrelated payola allegations.
While Kendrick Lamar is not named as a defendant in the lawsuit, Drake's legal team accused UMG of deliberately portraying him as "a pariah, a target for harassment, or worse."
The lawsuit asserted that UMG's actions were not merely a "war of words between artists," but rather a calculated decision to "publish, promote, exploit, and monetize allegations that it understood were not only false, but dangerous."
