Wilson Reflects on Signature Shoe Journey After Tribute from Sheryl Swoopes
At a preview event during All-Star Weekend, Sheryl Swoopes, overcome with emotion, honored A'ja Wilson, passing the torch to the next Black woman with a Nike signature shoe. Swoopes, the first Black woman with her own Nike signature, celebrated Wilson's upcoming A'One release, emphasizing its historical significance.
"A’ja, you are her," Swoopes declared, her voice filled with emotion. Wilson, visibly moved, acknowledged the profound moment.
The Nike A'One arrives amidst a surge in popularity for women's basketball and sneakers, with Wilson's shoe joining the ranks of groundbreaking releases like Sabrina Ionescu's Nike Sabrina 2.
The A'One debuts in a "Pink A'ura" colorway, Wilson's favorite. Nike highlights the pink shade as a symbol of Wilson's leadership, confidence, and "big Leo energy." The shoe's design incorporates layered cuts, reminiscent of pearl layers, a nod to a necklace given to Wilson by her grandmother. Celtic character tattoos, referencing her parents, are also featured on the tongue.
Designed by Ben Nethongkome, the A'One prioritizes performance with a Cushlon ST2 foam sole. Wilson collaborated closely with Nethongkome, ensuring the shoe reflected her vision.
In an interview, Wilson shared her journey to getting a signature shoe, revealing that she had always dreamed of it but never felt it was a realistic goal until later in her career. She described the emotional moment when she learned she would be getting her own shoe, revealing that she "blacked out" from excitement.
Wilson also spoke about her relationship with Sheryl Swoopes, highlighting the bond they share as Black women with signature shoes. She emphasized the significance of the moment, stating, "It's bigger than us."
Wilson expressed her desire for everyone to wear the A'One, from LeBron James to college stars like Paige Bueckers, emphasizing its universal appeal. "Anybody and everybody that loves just the game, sneakers, comfort, I would love them in A’One," she said.
The A'One collection also includes apparel, featuring the A'Symmetric tight and a cropped hoodie with a satin liner, catering to diverse hair types.
Wilson's A'One represents a significant milestone, not only for her but for women's basketball and sneaker culture.
