Yale University is set to offer a unique course exploring the cultural impact of Beyoncé. The course, titled "Beyoncé Makes History: Black Radical Tradition History, Culture, Theory & Politics through Music," will be taught by African American Studies and music professor Daphne Brooks in Spring 2025.
The course will delve into Beyoncé's work from 2013 to 2024, analyzing her music, fashion, and visual art to examine Black history, intellectual thought, performance, and the Black female experience in media and politics. Students will engage with readings from renowned scholars such as Hortense Spillers, the Combahee River Collective, Cedric Robinson, and Karl Hagstrom Miller.
Professor Brooks, who previously taught a course on Black women in popular music culture at Princeton University, was inspired by the enthusiasm surrounding Beyoncé's work. She believes that Beyoncé's artistic innovations and her ability to intertwine history, politics, and Black cultural life make her an ideal subject for a dedicated course.
This groundbreaking course highlights the significant cultural influence of Beyoncé and her ability to inspire and educate.
