Actor Shares Personal Experiences While Promoting New Film
In a recent interview with Esquire, Denzel Washington revealed a candid look into his past, discussing his experiences with alcohol and his journey toward sobriety. The two-time Oscar winner admitted to a 15-year pattern of drinking, though he never succumbed to addiction or dependence on hard drugs.
"I never got strung out on heroin," he confessed. "Never got strung out on coke. Never got strung out on hard drugs. I shot dope just like they shot dope, but I never got strung out. And I never got strung out on liquor."
Washington's role as an alcoholic pilot in the 2012 film "Flight" marked a turning point in his relationship with alcohol. He temporarily abstained from drinking during the film's production and briefly after, but ultimately returned to his former habits.
Now, as he approaches his 70th birthday, Washington has embraced a sober lifestyle. He recognizes the potential damage that excessive drinking could have caused and is focused on the future.
"This is the last chapter—if I get another 30, what do I want to do?" he pondered.
Despite his age, Washington remains passionate about his acting career and has expressed interest in exploring opportunities behind the camera. His latest film, "Gladiator 2," is set to hit theaters this week, showcasing his enduring talent and dedication to his craft.
