Brings Her Onstage to Perform Song Sampling Her Early Work
Cordae's "Tiny Desk Concert" featured a heartfelt moment as he brought his mother, Jennifer Dunston, onstage to perform her original song, which he sampled for his track "06 Dreamin."
Introducing the song, Cordae explained its personal significance. "This next song is called '06 Dreamin,' it's really special to my heart," he said. He shared the story of his mother, an aspiring singer who never achieved her breakthrough, and how he sampled her 2006 recording for his song. "Ironically enough ... she's living that dream through me because I'm here with y'all. I ended up sampling one of her old songs to make this song. But like I said, we back home, man. I don't got to use the sample, we got the real thing here today."
He then invited his mother to the stage, where she delivered a live rendition of the sample, mirroring its inclusion in the studio version of "06 Dreamin."
"Can y'all make some noise for my Mama one time?" Cordae exclaimed after the performance. "Thank you, Mom, for blessing me. Appreciate you, Mom, the invoice is on the way. Don't worry about it, OK? I got it."
Cordae's "Tiny Desk" set also included performances of "Saturday Mornings," "C Carter," "Have Mercy," "Nothings Promised," and "RNP."
